Specialty
Optics is
a product line of DAC International, Inc.
DAC International,
founded in 1964, is a manufacturer of CNC equipment for the production of
contact, intraocular and spectacle lenses, and has
become a pioneer and leader in the development of machines that accept inputs to
create Freeform® designs.
DAC offers the RxD
Spectacle Lens Lathe, a high precision, diamond turning machine for back
surface generation, and the Soft
Lap Polisher (SLP), the only polishing system
that can be used to polish freeform® lens designs without special
adaptation.
Because of patent
issues surrounding the technology of turning the Rx and the add on the backside
of spheres, DAC has been unable to actively promote this feature.
Therefore, in order to utilize
the capability of the RxD Lathe and Soft Lap Polisher (SLP), DAC developed the
software to create a Specialty
Lens Menu, which provides the means to take low-cost lens blanks, backside of
spheres and turn them into: Slabs, Round Seg Bi-Focals and Lenticulars.
Towards this end, DAC established Specialty
Optics as a laboratory operating
from its Carpinteria facility, where specialty lenses are produced for labs only.
Specialty
Optics Lab Manager,
Jim Marks, joined DAC International in 1996, where he served as Applications
Manager. With ten years experience in software development and lens
design, Jim now oversees the production of specialty lenses and the testing of
new designs and equipment.
